Stephen studied Fine Art at Leicester Polytechnic (now De Montfort University) and the Slade School of Fine Art, University College London. He then returned to Leicester Polytechnic to undertake a PhD in computing concerned with the development of computer support for artists and designers.
Throughout his career, he has researched the development and use of computer aided design systems. Since the early nineteen-nineties this research has focussed on the requirements of computer systems to support design teams separated by distance. Allied to this general interest in mediated design, Stephen is exploring the relationship between sketching and cognition.
Stephen is a member of an Arts and Humanties Research Board (AHRB) funding committee.<
